Why Vocabulary & Syntax Matter

Children need to understand 95–98% of the words in a book, article, TV show, or movie. Without this, meaning can get lost. Syntax shows how words relate to each other in sentences. Even knowing all the words isn’t enough if sentence structure is confusing. Comprehension Depends on Both. Vocabulary tells children what words mean, and syntax tells them how ideas connect. Both are essential, and without them, comprehension can break down, no matter how many words a child knows.
